RIP VAN WINKLE.
VISITS GISBORNE: One hears-occasionally of the pro-, duction of such a phenomenon as a person who has never travelled: in a railway train, or- who has never entered upon the centres of the citizen lint.l reaching a mature age. It is seldom, however, that the child' of the city or he who has only tasted of the fuller .life is satisfied thereafter to dwell in the backblocks and remain a recluse, without a periodical visit ■■; to' town. There, came to Gisborne the other day one "Davie McConochie," as he.is known, after an existence in the regions of Whatatutu for some three years, without visit to town and a resident of Poverty Bay for over thirty years without "crossing the bar" to the outside Wurld. The old fellow, looks hale and hearty after hi&life in natural surroundings, and though he has about-reached the allotted span, appears quite able to look after him-" self for years to come. He remembers Auckland as a hamlet and witnessed its growth to a town and then saw \ Gisborne evolve from virgin bush to a prosperous township and finally a bustling town. 'Mr McConochie oam'e down for his holiday, marvelled at the of Gisborne, ar.d returni ed with satisfaction to his more iprimi- ■ tiye sm-roundings : in the hills.—Gisborne "Times."
