The doctors are unable, to cope with the epidemic because patiente decline to follow their instructions. FEDERAL LAND TAX. The receipts from the Federal Land Tax confirm the belief that the Treasurer's estimate of £1,000,000 will be about realised. CATHOLICS AND EMPIRE DAY. At the Empire League dinner Sir Joseph Carruthers referred to. Cardinal Moran's attitude in regard to Empire Day. He sdid that England, Ireland, Scotland and Australia each had a special day they celebrated. It was good to have a day which all parts of the Empire could celebrate together. Cardinal Moran should remember that priests persecuted in foreign countries, always found security under the British flag. Received 12.5 a.m., May 27th. The final referenda figures for the Commonwealth are: Legislative powers—Yes, 483,414 • No, 742,673. ' Monopolies.— Yes, 488,626; No 736,363. ' Altogether 41,905 papers were informal.
