PRIESTS IN THE ISLANDS. Press Association—Bv Tel.—Copvright. SYDNEY, Jan '23. The Rev. Father Chcrireyill, Procurator of the Marist Mission in the South Seas, states that the Governor of New Caledonia visited Wallis Island to investigate the charges of clerical intolerance. Ho afterwards condemned the commissionaire's action and eulogised the work of tho mission■ers against the assertion of anonymous officers of an unnamed little interisland steamer, whose word had no weight. The fact was that the King ;md his ministers enacted some stringent lans protecting commercial interests and the honour of women against adventurers. The statement that the natives had to kneel while the priests parsed by was absolutely imtrm.'. Tlicustom of kneeling to chiefs w;is extended as the same mark of respect to priests who were considered r.s chiefs. The statemont that natives seized opportunities to run r.way was untrue. They were always of a roving disposition. They were free to travel, and frequently did go. however, returned to the island.
