The speakers against altering State powors included Messrs McGowcn, Holman, and Neilson, all New South Wales Ministers. By an amendment in the Industrial Disputes Act, tho Government intends to provide that every worker may belong to an industrial organisation. The Master Printers of London resolved that as their offer of arbitration was rejected, they would resist the men's demands. Received 12.30 a.m., Jan. ?:Ith. LOCAL BODIES ELECTIONS. SYDNEY, Jan. 29. Country and subuSrban municipal and shire election returns received show that Labour has not gained the victories expected. THE LABOUR CONFERENCE. The Labour Conference negatived motions providing for compulsory voting, voting machines, and reduction of members. A WATERSIDE STRIKE. MELBOURNE, Jon. 29. Wharf labourers at work on the stsamerrs Marloo and Arawatta struck, demanding 4d an hour extra for handling cement and superphosphates. The- company granted the extra 4d, but refused to include it in tho agreement. Other wharf labourerrs joined the strike, and all except timber vessels are idle. About six hundred men are affected by the- strike. Tho men thought that oement and superphos-~-hr>'v.6 were included in the list of special cargoes, for which extra payment would bo made, but when they got tho licts it was found they wore not., and the masters rofnso to include them,, although paying tho increase now. The masters 6ay they intend to sit back till the men resume- work.
