BOWLING.

ASHBURTON V.'KIA TOA. j Despite the efforts of Jupiter to damp the ardour of bowler's, three rinks from Kia Toa journeyed to Ashburton yesterday with the Friendly Sooieties 1 picnic people, to do battle for their club. It was not ft bowler's day, and things looked ominous whan Afihburton was reached at 11 a.m. However at 12 o'clock the rain ceased, and matters began to look brighter. At 3 o'clock the green was declared playable, and both teams got to work without delay. It had been predicted that Kia Toa would be completely wiped out, as the prowess of Ashburton bowlers is well known, but the race is not always to the swift the battle to the strong, and before many heads had been played it was evident that Kia Toa weronot going to take a beating without a good fight. At halftime Kia Toa were 4 up and going strong. The remainder of the game proved very exciting, good play being exhibited on both sides. Finally the Kia Toa Club finished up with a lead of 8. A unique feature of the match was the fact that-the team skipped by Mr Williams in one head scored a possible 8 against their opponents. Ashburton ladies-are ihoted for their hospitality, and they did everything that could be done for the comfort of the visitors in the way of providing afternoon tea. At.the conclusion of the match Mr W. H. Williams, vice-presi-dent of the Kia Toa Club, thanked the members of' the Ashburton Club for their hospitality; although the day had not been all that could be desired, the hospitality of Ashburton made up for everything. He called for three cheers for Ashburton. and one more for the ladies. Mr Stewart, president of the Ashburton Club, returned thanks, and hoped that the Ashburton bowlers would have the pleasure of meeting the Kia Toa players on ' their own green scon, when *they would have a chance i of winning back their lost honours.
