LOST ON THE HILLS.

- ■ A 36 HOURS' FAST. i Mr H. E. Vincent, architect,* for- 1 merly of Temuka, now of Ashburton, got lost on the Albury Hills on Saturday morning last, owing to mist "and rain, and was not discovered till Sun- j day evening. He spent the verting thirty-six hours without bite orsup, wet through and cold, and during . the greater portion of the time thor-! oughly exhausted. I Speaking to a "Herald" reporter, Mr Vincent graphically described his I adventure. On Saturday morning early he left the residence of his host, 2\lr Arthur Dale, Manahune, to have a look at Mounts Cook and Sefton with : a pair of binoculars. When on tho ! hills a heavy mist suddenly descended, ; and a drizzling rain commencing to ' fall lie hurried down, and after slipping, and sliding for some time suddenly found himself on a narrow ledge over a steep facing, and unabio to proceed in any direction. Tho rain then in--1 creased, and on that platform, without any shelter and dressed only in a light suit of clothes, he had to remain from one o'clock on Saturday till 7,30 o'clock on Sunday morning. Warmed by the morning sun and the rain ceasing, he was able to leave his perch and reach the top of the hills again. The mist was there as thick as ever, and thinking that the cold wind was blowing from the west ho endeavoured to steer for the Manahune ranges, but went in the opposito direction. He searched for hours for a suitable place to descend, and at last succeeded In petting down into Mr McMillan's land. Late on Sunday afternoon, when utterly spent, he attracted tho Attention of a sheplierd. Mr Scott, the hospitable manager of the station, rendered him every attention, and to relieve tho anxiety of his relatives, with other friends, drove him to Mr Dale's at 11.30 on Sunday night. On arriving there he found that search paprties of neighbours about thirty persons in all, on foot and horse had been scouring the hills for him from Sunday morning till he appeared. To these kind friends Mr Vincent expressed his warmest gratitude.
