SOUTHLAND MATTERS.
NOXIOUS WEEDS. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, June 2. Several deputations dealing with Southland matters were introduced to the Minister of Agriculture this morning by Mr G. J. Anderson, M.P., for Mataura. The first was in reference to the recent prosecutions of settlers for failing to clear their proDerties of noxious weeds. It was stated that the large land-owners were allowed to escnne proS seeution, while the small land-Owners j were prosecuted year in and vear out. ■ It was also pointed out that it was comparatively easv to treat weeds In I open country, but in freshly-cleared i hush country ft was well nigh imposJsi hie to get weeds under control. ft | was also pointed out that the snroad i of weeds was due to a groat extent to seeds coming from only partly-cleared Crown lands.
Mr Mackenzie, in reolv, fullv dealt with the policv of the' Department in connection with this question, and promised that the representations made would receive careful consideration.
