OPPOSED TO REDUCTION. Press Awociation-By Telegraph-Copyright MELBOURNE, Nov. 11. Giving evidence before the Senate Committee on the cable service, Sir Robert Scotl, secretary to the post office, .said ho would not advise a further reduction in the, price of cables. It. would mean increased business, hut would only put more money into the newspaper proprietors' pockets. It the public were to benclit by the reduction he would advise it. The Pacific cable, should liavo a cable across the Atlantic. He thought the Common wealth should identify itself more closely with the Pacific cable. He would not suggest an alteration of the Press rate on the land lines. The country was losing money by the present rate.
The committee obtained leave to sit iu Sydney where they wished to examine at least four witnesses. It would be more economical for the committee to visit Sydney than bring the witnesses to Melbourne.
