The "Herald" adds: "The. fa ft that the drop in the value of its chief product, wool, should have given Yho country such a. severe shock is the best evidence, we can have that there was undue, inflation of land values."
RECEPTION IN MELBOURNE. 1 A STATE LUNCHEON. Received 10.50 p.m., June 23rd. MELBOURNE, June 23. The members of the State Cabinet welcomed Sir J. G. Ward, who was entertained at luncheon in Parliament Buildings. In addition to the State Ministers, there were present Mr Deakin, Mr Cook, and Sir John Forrest. Sir John Forrest proposed tbo guest's health in the absence of Mr Deakin, who left to attend the opening of the Federal Parliament. Sir John said that Sir J. G. Ward was recognised as a very strong man throughout Australia and England. Ho had accomplished great work during his strenuous public career, and Australia, was proud of his latest act in offering a New Zealand Dreadnought. Sir J. X Forrest said he regarded the coining Defence Conference as one of the greatest of. history sinco the days of Napoleon, and wished Sir J. G. Ward a successful mission. Ho was sure that Sir J. G. Ward would take a leading and distinguished part in the Conference. Sir J. G. Ward, in replying, said t-hfjt ho was proud to represent lovnl Now Zealand. Tie. regarded the conference as a. momentous one in tho Empire's history, and would gladly cooperate with Australia's representative in. the promotion of the Empire's interests.
A party of Ministers gave Sir J. G Ward an enthusiastic send-off.
