THE RAKAIA.

COAL BUNKER ON FIRE. Per Press Association. LYTTELTON, M,-\y 9. Just as the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Rakaia was unmooring preparatory to sailing for London via Monte Video, Teneriffe, and Gibraltar, smoke was observed coming through the flooring of tho. chief engineer's room. An examination revealed an incipient fire in the after port bunker. The coal was smouldering and smoking. Steaming water was poured in and the smoke ceased. A quantity of coal was removed, and a survey made by Lloyd's surveyor. The manager of the Shipping Company states that the fire was not serious. It was caused by a naked steam pipe passing through the bunker being covered with coal, which wis fired by the heat. The departure ot the Rakaia was postponed, till tomorrow morning. 1
