BAND MATTERS

To the Editor of the ," Timaru Herald." Sir, —In to-day's issue of the " Herald." AY. Craig writes stating that the Garrison Band had neither made overtures nor offered any inducements to him to join the band, and that he had i"ined them of his own free will. About three months ago he informed me that Sergeant Depholf had n<=ked him to join the Garrison, and also that other members had offered him employment if he would join them. On Monday last the 17th inst. (the date of the local referred to iu his let-

tcr) T asked him why he had left the Marines, and his answer was: "The Garrison have got mc a constant job with Palliser, and I am to start next week." lam appending Mr Craig's resignation from the Marine Band, which speaks for itself. Be- other members of the Murine Band I am prepared to publish, if necessary, the names of seven members (exclusive of Mr Craig) to whom overtures have been made by members of the Garrison to join them. Thanking you for space,— I am, etc., HARRY MAYO. Conductor Timaru' Marine Band. 20th January, 1909.

(Copy.) Timani, Jany. loth, 1909. Mr R. R. Munro, Sec. Marine- Band. Dear Sir,—l beg to tender my resignation as.a member of jthe above band. I suppose every one generally gives a reason. Well, my reason is lam joining the Garrison Band, for the matter of £s d I have no desire to be bad friends with the band'- although I am leaving. I only hope we wdll bo, as in the past, good friends. wishing the-band every success. 1 remain, yours sincerely, WM . CRAIG .

[This letter was received late on AYednesdav night, and was held over. —Ed. T.H.J, ■■■
