MEETING UNDER GASLIGHT.

It was a happy, thought which prompted the Tiniaru , Rowing Club -Swimming Club to depart from the Leaten track by holding a swimming meeting at night. The experiment was tried last night and it proved very successful. That the "public appreciated the departure was evident from the large attendance. The weather was all in favour of swimming,' being warm an! the air still. The' Century Baths were well lighted by the Timaru Gas Company. Water is rather difficult to light, especially when the lights have to be placed at a height of about 15 feet above the water. The Gas Company erected eight lamps of 3200 candle power in the aggregate. There were she Humphrey lamps, one three-light star lamp, and one 1000 c.p. Lucas lamp. No less than 750 feet of pipes were used in the job. In addition to gas, about 20 Chinese lanterns were suspended above the water, and a pretty effect was produced. As to the swimming, it must he said that it was of a very interesting character.:- Avaried programme was presented aiid each event was keenly contested. Included in the competitors. were some men from Christchurch. The Marine Band was in attendance and the music played, added greatly to the pleasure of the evening. The judges were Messrs J. Reilly, G. Granger, "W. J. Priest, and \V. Jordan,-the latter judging the diving only. Mr F. J. Dunn officiated as starter, Mr A. W. Price, as check starter, Messrs H. Collins and C H.
