MIDLAND RAILWAY.
ARTHUR'S PASS TUNNEL. . Por Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 13. Very satisfactory progress is being made with the Arthur's Pass Tunnel. The Otira end of the tunnel is in 21 chains. The hydro-electric power plant is completed and in all probability will be in operation soon after Mr McLean and Mr W. H. Gorvin, the recently appointed engineer in charge, .reach Otii a to-morrpw. The similar plant r»t the Bealey end of the tunnel should be in operation about the end of next month. The recently made award of the Arbitration Court lias evidently given as much satisfaction to the workers as fo the contractors and the relations between the parties at present are harmo.io.is. So satisfied are the majority of men with the conditions that they conki'.ni-vd at work during the holidays, instead of knocking off for ibout a forti.igh.-. as the contractors fully anticipated v enld he the case. Of the 150 men r +.heroabouts engaged on the work ,onlv ij.nt or ten knocked off for the Ic -..'l.iys. Mr McLean thought he was justified in' stating that the Court's award had met with the approval or the men; at least it had removed all outward signs of discontent. Mr McLean and Mr Gorvin leave for Otira on Thursdav.
