JUDICIAL.
ATTORNEY-GENERAL'S \ lEWS. l'cr Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. If, " I propose to follow the usual course in connection with the matter, and 1' have indicated to the Chief Justice the purport of the letter from the Wellington District Law Soeictv," replied the Hon. Dr. Findlay (Minister of Justice), when a press reporter asked if an additional Judge would be appointed to relieve the congestion of work likely to be caused by Sir Robert Stout's forthcoming absence in England. "I wish to ascertain the Chief Justice's views as to the nccessitv of appointing a temporary Judge. There is no desire to overwork our' Judges; on the other hand, it is the dutv of the Government to take care that the very heavy expense of, an . additional Judge shall not be incurred until it is really necessary. Of that necessitv the Chief of the .Tudi-iarv should be the best judge." The Minister was reminded that when Mr Justice Edwards was on leave, Mr Button temporarily became a Judge of the Supreme Court; "but- the Chief Justice was almost wholly engaged on the Native Land Commission at the same time, so that the country was two short of its complement of Judges at that time," replied Dr. Findlay.
