A match under Northern Union rules "between the professional representative- of Auckland ami Taranaki was played here to-day in unfavourable Trent her and before about 600 spectators. The game was fast and open but not exciting. Taranaki winning by 5 points (a try by Hardgreaves) and a'penalty goal by the same player, to 3 points (a try scored by Tyler). A DRAWN GAME. The Sou'h Canterbury junior representatives journeyed to Waimate yesterday, going down by the first express, to play a match against the W annate Sub-union team on the >how ground. The ground, though somewhat sodden, was quite playable. The teams were fairly even as regards eize and weight, and a keen contest took place between them- aimate won the toss and secured an advantage right at the start, and liad South Canterbury penned in their 25 for a while. Eventually after a loose rush Morgan scored for \Va;mate near the pos.s, but the try was' not- converted. From this on to half time the game was very even, each side attacking alterna'ely, but no further score resulted. In the second spell the play was exceedingly vigorous, tiiough no brilliant form was irhown. South Canterbury made several attemp s at goal, but Sullivan's kicks, though good, fell short. McKellar at last, after a good run'dotjm the line, centred, and a scrum ensued under the posts. The ball coming out- to the South Canterbury backs enabled Be.otn to score. ileal h failed wish the kick. Fronf this to tlie call of time each side made strenuous efforts to Improve its position, but no further score resulted, and the game ended in a draw. Mr C. Goldstone acted referee.
