In the Magistrate's Court to-day an interesting point rose out of an information laid against Captain Suteliffe, of the Tongariro, charging him with failing to sign and give seamen discharged from hi? ship A certificate of discharge. It- appears that the Runutaka was lying in the stream, and one of her fhemen being missing, a man was transferred from the Tongariro. It was contended for the defence that the captain's action was one of transfer, not discharge. The Magistrate reserved his decision. Mr Gilruth, Chief Government Veterinarian, who has been appointed professor of veterinary pathology at Melbourne University, will leave New Zealand early in the coming year. The University has taken over a private veterinary, school, and will carry cm-the work with a subsidy from tho Government. DUNEDIN, Sept. 17. At the Police Court this morning, Ah Moon, a Chinese shopkeeper, was fined £SO, for having opium suitable for smoking in his possession. Accused was previously fined £lO for a similar offence?. The police alleged that accused trafficked in opium, and ran a pak-a-poo school, and did no legitimate business as a storekeeper. The Otago Education Board decided to subsidise the establishment of public school libraries to the ( extent of giving 10s- for every pound raised locally, and assist school committees in making a .«.e----lection of suitable book*. The Board als-o resolved that all of three rooms and over shall have fire drill as a regular j-art of school work.
