A Legislative Investigation Committee sitting •at Alabama, elicited remarkable evidence '"respecting the State convict leasing system practised in the Southern States. It, was shown *iiat at one State prison farm the convicts are lined up and i old like mules to the highest bidder. Que convict was leased out ill exchange for seven negroes' because ho possessed clerical ability, and a. white boy, who was leased, -was whipped to death for spilling coffe*} on a-••■hog.
