FOOTBALL.

SOUTH CANTERBURY BEAT NORTH OTAGO, The annual match between. North Otago and youth Canterbury took place yesterday, on the Athletic Grounds, the home • team winning by 8 points to nil. The match had been looked forward to with a good deal of interest, but tho btonn which burst over the grotind at mid-day rendered the prospects of a, decent game very remote, and when the Oainaru men arrived by the 1.30 train the outlook was still gloomy. The sky cleared very quickly, however, and by tho time the game started at a quarter past two, the sun was peeping through, and the only drawbacks to good football were greasy ground and ball. Considering the state of the roads, the attendance was good, £l4 15s being taken at the gales, and though an early start was necessary in order to allow the visitors to return by the 4 p.m. train, most of the onlookers had arrived before the kick-off. Mr A. Shirtcline- carried the referee's whistle. Tho teams were:— North Otago (Yellows).—R. Taylor, J. Mullen, E. Curtail, J. Taylor, G. Uttley, R. Ongley, J. Toohey, L. Grant, G. Patterson, J. Clark, R. Molloy, W. McCullougb, J. Minty, J- Shaud, J. Henderson. South Canterbury (Green). —U. Scott, E. Fraser, G. Bradley, G. Spillane, E. Horgan, G. Coles, G. Priest, M. Melvin, J. O'Brien, W. Scott, G. Fitzgerald, W. Carlton, A. Budd, W. Hooper, J. Roddick. THE FIRST SPELL. South Canterbury kicked off from the eastern end, Ongley returning to near the centre. The Green pack at once attacked briskly, and a smart kick by Toohey was well returned by D. ScoU, and a couple of scrums were taken near the Yellows' line. An attempt to relieve by the Otago forwards was checked by Bradley, and the Green vanguard continued to 2» ress > but eventually Curran transferred play to the South Canterbury 25, and a good bit of passing between Uttley, Ongley and Curran ended in loose play which forced the Greens. Smart kicking between Uttley, Bradley, Taylor and Horgan left play near the South Canterbury 25, and a tree kick was nullified by man in front. A shot from a penalty was taken by Ongley, but O'Brien charged the kick down and went ou to the centre. Another free kick to the Yellows was well returned by Spillane, and a succeeding loose rush was ended by 1). Scott finding touch at midway. A characteristic Green rush fieaded by Melvin and Budd allowed Bradley to make a nice pyes to Spillane, who was thrown out at the comer. The Greens kept np a hot attack, and a quick bit of passing right along the line should have ended in a score, but a knock-on lost the chance, and a penalty cleared the North Otago line. Ongley checked another attack, then Priest kicked along the ground and W. Scott got away at the head of a rush which ended in Spillane scoring near the corner. Roddick landed a fine. goal. South Canterbury, 5-0. A hard kick by Uttley forced the Greens immediately, but Mullen let the home team out to the centre. Each side tried back play, the ball being lost at each attempt; a forward rush by the Yellows was returned by Horgan, and a couple of penalties left the play equal. Attacks by the Yellows were impulsed by Bradley and Horgan, but offcide against W. Scott gave Ongley at fruitless shot at goal. Horgan got into trouble by holding ou too long in a rush, Fraser saving smartly. Ongley, Uttley and Curran were unable to pierce the Greens' defence, but a bad kick by Priest marked by Uttley gave Ongley another tiy at goal. Coles returned the kick and smothered Uttley, and Fraser went on to the Yellows 25, where some passing by. Priest, Coles, and Co. brightened up the game. Priest got in a good kick which Fraser unproved by collaring Taylor with the ball. Uttley relieved cleverly, and a forward rush let North Otago to the centre, where some bad passing by their backs allowed Coks to secure possession, and O'Brien started a fine dribble which was taken up by the Greou pack, and Carlton stored near the posts. Roddick just missed with the kick, and the spelt ended South Canterbury 8, North Otago 0. THE,SECOND SPELL. The kick-off just beat Spillane, and bounced out in the Greens' 25. Priest, Coles and Melvin worked out, aud Priest and Coles made an opening which Bradley failed to take advantage of. The South Canterbury backs threw the ball about freely, and Coks and Bradley gave Fraser a chance which Jet him get to the corner before being stopped. North Otago worked back to Uie 25, but successive attempts to get further were checked by D. 'Scott. Fast following saw Taylor hard pressed, a free kick against Carlton getting North Otago out of «. tight corner, and a pretty bit of play by Uttley and Ongley was ruined by Mullen, Budd making good the ground gained. Spillane put in a. smart dash to the Yellows' 25, where a pausing rush by Priest, Coles, and Horgan was ended by Taylor marking. South Canterbury maintained their advantage, Uttley saving nicely on one occasion, and an essay at passing by the Yellows saw Roddick cut in and go right to their line, Toohey saving by lying on the ball. A couple of free kicks drove the Greens out, and a dribble by O'Brien was succeeded by scrambling play which ended near half-way. Horgan was responsible for the next movement, and from the 25 Pmst, Coles and Horgan gained further grouud by passing. Toohey and Uttley replied with a rush to the centre, but the respite was only temporary, Fraser and Hooper getting back to their line. Mullen eventually averted danger, -iiid North Otago continued the rush till 1). Scott brought them np. A fast ninh by W. Scott to the centre was followed by one to the 25 by O'Brien and Melvin, where the Green rearguard did some neat handling of a greasy ball, but were unable to break down the defence. Coles aud Uttley stopped rushes in turn, then a big South Canterbury rush was ended by Ongley cutting in when offside. The Yellows gradually cleared their line, till offside against Minty sent them back, and after an exchange of mark* between Uttley and Spillane, Priest, O'Brien and Coles swept right to the Yellows lise. A short mark relieved, and good wi.rk by Coks was undone by Mullen. A free kick for offside Ik Ihe Yellows was not) turned to much account, and time was called with South Canterbury attacking strongly. The score was not increased in the. spell, and the game ended— South Canterbury 8 points North Otago nil JUNIOR MATCH. Celtic v.
