The question of. whether the Bendigo train's brakes failed is to engage- the attention of an expert,- who expresses the opinion that .they . were on, giving rigidity to. the train; and preventing any of its cars telescoping. .... The report- of the engineer of the second engine has'leaked out. He declares that the signals were against them. He next observed that the train was not- being -pulled up at,the usual spot.' He then applied his brakes, but they failed.
The Chief Commissioner denies that there was any delay in getting relief away. An ambulance train was despatched thirtvfive minutes after. th& news was received. Everything was in readiness, but- the services of doctors had to be ■secured.
Earl Crewe, Secretary of State for the Colonies, has cabled his sorrow and regret.

Milburn,' the driver of ill© Bendigo train, luid been on duty 11 hours 35 minutes, while * he- driver and fireman of the second engine commenced work at 4.45 in the morning, and w%re on duty 18 hours* later.
