ATHLETICS.
MILITARY SPORTS. The Geraldine Mounted Rifles, who are at present in cuinp 011 Mr G. Macdonald's property near Geraldine held it military sports meeting yesterday afternoon. The men, to the numbetr of 30 under Captain Harris, with five member* of the Ai'Jiburton Mounted Jlifles will be in camp till to-morrow. During their period under canvas they have been put through some useful military work bv Captain Nelson and Sergeant-''Major Clement, of the i>ei'UKment staff. Yesterday Colonel Hawkins and Captain Morgan were in attendance and to-day Major Shldholme of Ashburton will piobably go into camp. The gathering yesterday was successful atf far as the sport was concerned, but tlie attendance of the public was poor. The majority of the events were keenly competed for but the entries were not large. The following are the results of the various events:—Best turnout file—Trooper Rose 1: Sergeant Hammond 2. Best troop horse—Trooper Rose 1, Sergeant Wareing 2. Lloyd-Lindsay—The only team to compete was that under Sergeant Hammond, including Sergeant Wareing. Corporal FHammond and I'lirooper McPherson. Best led, four -horses—Sergeant McP.hedran 1, Trooper Squirt's 2. Rescue race—This proved one of the best events of the day and one or two of the ridel's did seme fast work. The first - heat, was won by Sergeant MePbedran. second by Corporal Hammond, wlvks the latter also won the iinaL. Bareback- • .wrestling—This was another good turn and provoked a good deal of aiimiseniiint, some of the competitors showing considerable skill in keeping their seats. The event was gob off in several heats, won respectively by Wareing. F. Hammond. Dean and McPhedran. The final was won after a, long tussle by Wareing. Leading one horse over hurdles—■ Corporal Hammond 1. Sergeant McPhedran 2. These were it-lie only entrants. Leadinff horses over hurdles twos—So'.';, geant Warring 1. Corporal Hammond 2. T.ent-pegging'—Sergeant Wareing 1, Corlioral Hammond 2. IGO Yards witli rifles—Private Dean 1. Sergeant Wareing 2. In the ovenini; a smoke concert was held attire camp ~as a fitting finale, to a most enjoyable day.
