THE CHRISTCHURCH SHOW.

'•THE PEOPLE'S DAY."

.Spec inl—l W TVlegra ph.

CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 8.

The rain -which fell heavily till late in the night before, ceased before morning, and' dry though dull -weather favoured the People's Day. The. people took full advantage of it, to the great benefit of the A. and, P. Association, the attendance as measured l by the main gate receipts being considerably- more in an last year—the so-called international year. The dull sky was reflected in the aspect of the crowd, very few light lured dresses relieving the monotony of blacks and greys. The people, the principal -exhibiton the grounds, presented a striking appearance viewed from the stand, and in turn -when seen from the ling. The meet popular item appeared to be Ihe parade of prize winning hq.i-ses'. arid cattle, and the most freely applauded of these were the tradesmen's turnouts, some of which were smart. Mr Hamilton's four-in-hand' drag led the vehicles, and was well applauded. Anything in motion drew attention, hence when the paiading boys, and girls' on ponkG began scampering about the ground their conduct wa>3 highly esteemed. In the same reason any bit of running machinery was attractive, and small and large there was a good deal of this l —from puffing traction engines and coughing oil engines, to a clock spring rocking a cradle.'. The shearing and miiking machines afforded untiring interest to changing '.crowds,- .the milkers especially. Some good' mechanics think very highly of the new \ Christ - church machine.

After the parade, which filled up -about 4-0 minutes very well (heavy horses and catt'.e first, their light horses and -vehicles), cams the jumping, and this became tedious, lasting about three hours. ; I omitted yesterday to mention Mr P. Davidson's win of second prize in a classi of irine aged draught entires with his Here I Go. South. Canterbury rendered'.useful assistance to-day in filling the ..light horse classes. Mr Henry Lee, of Temuka, won a first prize /and a £3 special for a pair of ponies in harness in a clasii of eleven pairs, and the same took oeeond place as a pony tandem, team, and his second tandem was very highly commended. Mr D. H. Edgar's Victory scoi.ed first honours among six roadster's up to 15st, and a £3 3s special as a journey horse for a 15st man. He-was also entered'as a'hunter, but he was'not in the humour for jumping. .Mr E. G. Temple, of Hilton, beatr six others in the class of roadkter up to list, with his hancjsome .chestnut Kowhai,. who also jumped into first place as a hunter up to list against eight, and)/again, as,the bast at any weight, in a field of nineteen. Two other South Canterbury horses :,com.pated in these two events, ; -Mr G reason's 'Rusty and Mr HurdleyV Rceembrn"; the former tried clumsily, the latter rushed her fences. Mr W. F. Hamilton's four-in-hand teanri (all bracks) which -were-, so much admired at; Timaru .;'show, were placed first to-day; and two, of the four first as a'.ca/iriag'e pair,. and the other.' two were 'adjudged second to a pair of Mr G. E. Rhodes'" r>3- a buggy pair.-Mr Hamilton also got first place for a tandem team and' second with one of the pair as a dog cart horse in a-class of eleven, and also'" first, and special with another as a buggy or gig horse in a class of ten.
