The market is steady. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following report from ths Produce Commissioner in London :—" Unfortunately since my last report concerning the market for butter there has not been any improvement to record. The only satisfaction that can be obtained is that during the past week there has been a somewhat steadier tone and values have not receded. Further very heavy supplier ' of eolonM butter, which this year show both landed and now on water a great increase over those of last year at this time, has undoubtedly been the chief cause of the decline in values. I have made extended enquiry as to the cause of depreciation in price, and can ascertain no other reason. Trade throughout the county is good; the retail demand is satisfactory. and every other condition is such as to firm the market under usual conditions. There are so far no stocks being placed in the cold store. The price has not L.'r l.i'.v v>. : u,.,.. .p., : lation ir. that munn-r. In fa/je of the.

prospacts of large supplies reported on' the market- here, that Siberia 'will show a large increase in her shipments of butter this season, and that these Trill commence to arrive in this country earlier than usual, this outlook naturally will check speculation in coloi.ial butter for cold storing. The cheese market has been steadily good, although during the past day or two it has been scarcely so strong and prices have been accepted for XeT Zealand cheese 6d per evrt lower than last quotation. There does not, however, Mem any likelihood of values falling veiy much. There is a good demand throughout the country, stocks are iu reasonable compass and holders are firm in their ideas. It is not probable, therefore, that any great change will take place before all the New Zealand shipments are disposed of.
