The Council met. at 2.30, when Parliament was opened by Commission! in the "way usual in the case 'of new Parliaments. "'Mr \ Lawry said that he was .thankful, ; . that; it. had. fallen to, his. lot, to move.\ ~ the election of Mr v Guinness, who had won> ; golde» opinions from all sides, and had ddsticgnfched himself by his affability to all, and especially by the care; and attention he im ariabV paid to the younger members. Mr Buddo seconded the motion, detailing the many services performed by Mr Guinness, and hoping that the House would come to a unanimous decision. This the House did at once. Mr Gumne-fc, in returning thanks for his the high office of Speaker, , declared thUt it was his endeavour to <' be always* vigilant and just to all, ever" without feai, favour or friendship;,' to "•, maintain always the tradition of the i . House, and hold the balance even between, parties. He reminded '.the House that without the support" of its members the Speaker was necessarily powerless, audi he concluded by submitting hiiuself to the judgment of the Hous-e. Or. taking the'chair, ilr Speaker- again thanked r the House for his election, and repeated, the- pledges he had given, on the floor of the House. The Hon. W. HalLJones corgratmated Mr Speaker heartily, sketched briefly Ms career, s and assured him of the continued <:onfidence > of the. House. 'The Leader of, the Opposition (Mr Massey) followed in the same strain, adding that Mr Speaker under all possible circum- ~, could depend on the support of members of both sides of the House Si Ms endeavours to uphold the -dignity of Parliament. Mr' Speaker briefly thanked tbe lastspeakers. The House adjourned at 3.20 p.m.
