ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
A PAINFUL CASE.' Per. Press Association.. AUCKLAND, May 17. Etta Utting, the young married -woman "who attempted ,to .commit suicide by swallowing a dozen dozes of toothache cure; came before Mr Kiddell, S.M., this afternoon.for sentence. . ; When evidence was heard on Monday.a young man deposed that accused when "recovering from the effects of the poison was asked why she took it, and; replied: " Because I love you." This'was indignantly denied by the woman, who behaved in such an excited state in Court that the. Magistrate, remanded her for medical examination as to the state of her mind. She was now reported by the prison surgeon to be quite sane. Her husband, a young man, told His Worship that they had been married two years and seven months, and his wife left him. seven weeks ago. He wished her to return, and would .make, arrangements to provide her with a home. Mrs Utting said she would return if her husband's treatment would improve, and Utting replied that he could prove that no had been better treated.
The Magistrate reminded , accused' that she. was charged ; with ; a serious offence, for which she could be imprisoned. However, he did not want to send -her to gaol, and as she promised to return to her husband;, she would be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called -upon. If she behaved, she would never be called upon. He hoped she saw the foolishness of her action.
