Church last/- Gouncillor. J. Eothweli presided, and suitably* introduced the speaker. Every availableiinchi of the building was occupied, and the audience was most enthusiastic. The Minister wo& frequently and heartily applauded throughout his speech, and at the conclusion, was. awarded, on. the motion of Mr J. J. Grandi, seconded by Mr Con. Crimmins, a very hearty vote of thanks for his interesting address, and a motion of continued confidence in the Government of "which he was a member, was also added. Before putting the motion, the chairman asked if there was any amendment, and the question was "reeted with a chorus of " noes." The motion was then put and carried amid deafening applause and cheers for " our member." Mr Hall Jones's address lasted an hour and a quarter, during which he spoke upon the leading political questions of the day, and replied most effectivelv to recent 'Opposition criticisms. Several questions were asked, including one as to whether the Minister thought it right that ladies should go around canvassing for votes for a certain candidate, which had been done, and was still being done in this district. To this Mr Hall-Jones replied that the ballot was secret, and no one was supposed to know how another person voted. He considered that if canvassing were going on as suggested the persons engaged in it were guilty of conduct which in his opinion was reprehensible. (Applause.) Mr Hall-Jones added that he had never himself asked for the vote of any man or woman, nor would he do so; and he considered it nothing short of an insult to the working men and women that people should go round" endeavouring to instruct them as to how they should vote. They had brains of their own, and they knew how to use them. (Hear, hear and applause.)
Mr Roileston addressed two meetings last night. The first at Salisbury, was attended by about 40 electors, Mr G. Talbot being in the chair.. At the conclusion of the address a vote of thanks and confidence was carried unanimously on the motion of Mr Kerr, seconded by Mrs R. Barry. Mr Rolieston, then visited the Pareora schoolhouse at Beaconsfield, where there was a large gathering of electors, the schoolroom being quite full. Mr J. R. Black occupied the chair. The address was on the same lines as the one delivered at the Theatre on Tuesday night; and at its conclusion a vote of thanks and confidence was carried unanimously, on the motion of Mr Hutton, seconded by Mr Halkett.
