HELPING THE BLIND.
| Mr J. W. Tighe is at present in Timam !<to further the foundation of an institution to help the blind in the South Island. Mr Tig-he lost his own sight about 27 years ago, and after undergoing a course) of training in an instttute in Sydney, he has since devoted his life to the training of those ■who suffer the deprivation of sight. He was instrumental in the establishment of | the Jubilee Institute for the blind in Auckland, of which, until about six months ago he was the resident principal. An illustrated pamphlet, .published by the Auckland '' Star" shows that this is quite a large institution—it has about 50 inmates—and that- it has done a great deal to brighten the lives of those who labour under one of the most depressing afflictions that can overtake humanity. Fifteen years ago, when he toured the colo-ny in the interests of this institution, Mr Tighe realised that Auckland was not the best place for it, and he has since been more fully convinced ■ of.: that drawback. It is, She says, a most difficult thing for a mother to part with a blind . child, even when she can reach it in a day, but when she has to fiend it away to Auckland, she can scarcely be induced to let it go. When the Auckland institution was being founded, ike promised, his supporters in this island that when the northern institute had' been got properly under weigh, he would help to establish a similar home .in ? Ghristchurcai- and he. is ' here now .'in, fulfilment of his promise.. Last Friday he had a . very: successful meeting in .Christchurch. An executive committee, with the Mayor (Mr C. M. Gray) at its head, was formed, and Mr Tighe; armed with , a document bearing the signature of Mr Gray and the other members of the committee, is now going through the island soliciting support for the move--1 -Mi* John Jackson -is interesting himself .in the project and has given a donation and Mr Tighe intends to call on the Mayor, Mr Craigie, Jhis morning. He hopes that the necessary funds to establish the institution in Christchurch will not be difficult to obtain, because he is under engagement to proc;ed to Japan, to take up an appointment as a teacher of teachers of the blind. He has been given a year's grace to enable him to fulfil his . promise that he would help in the establishment of an institute in Christchurch, and when that is done, the' work will b.e carried on by pupils whom he has trained in Auckland. .Mr Tig-he is staying at the Shamrock Hotel where he will be. glad to see anyone interested in the welfare of the blind.
