ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.

Per Press Association. * HOKITIKA, September 16. Nathaniel Rothwell was found dead at Kumara this morning, having fallen over a c'.sep face in the niglit, breaking his neck. Rothwell was employed at the Government water race. The inquest disclosed that deceased when on his way home from a friend's place on Wednesday evening accidentally fell over a steep place. He was found dead with his neck brotct-n. A verdict was returned accordingly. Deceased was a near relative of Mr anc i'.rs Seddon, and leaves a wife and two Wang children.

CHRISTCHURCH, September 16. At Sumner yesterday a girl, seven years of age, was playing on tlie sands with her brother and sister. She was running aloni< the beacli near the pier and Cave Rork, and at a spot where the water takes a sudden dip, she slipped in over her depth. Her elder sister went to her assistance but being unable to rescue her, scrambled out. A young woman whose name is unknown, then went to the child's assistance, and caught her after she had sunk twice, but got into difficulties and had to be assisted. The child would probabnly have been drowned but for the promptitude of Miss M. Denniston, daughter of Mr Justice Denniston, who plunged into the water, seized the child and held her up until Miss Mitchell came to her help with a boat-hook, and the two were pulled ashore. „
