A rainstorm flooded tho lake iii .Oakford Park, near Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and burst the dam. A car crowded with passengers, and a crowded M ailing room were demolished, and 100 people were drowned.
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 7. A fatal tram accident occurred to-day to a man named Jolm Cavauagli, cook at the Murist Brothers' school. He fell off a car whilst it was in motion, striking hi* head on the road and sustaining concussion of the brain. lie was removed to 1 the hospital, and dkd four hours afterwards. 1 A most extraordinary accident occurred last night. Mr 1). Russell, a. school teacher of Waihou, near Te Aroha, his wite and three girls, ranging from about, twelve to three years of age, iwie accidentally poisoned with phosphorus. It appears that- while the youngest girl %vns playing with a teapot, and a box of wax vestas, unknown to her sislevs she puKthe matches into the teapot. The tea was made, and the accident was not discovered tiil the meal was nearly finished. The teapot wn.i being filled a second lime, when the box of matches was scan in the teapot. A doctor was immediately telegraphed for. Meanwhile emetics were administered with good eneet. When the doctor arrived Mrs • Russell was in a scmi-collapsed condition, but the others wero out of danger. Today Mrs Riwsell was reported to be progressing favourably.
WELLINTON, July 7. Lily Rasmusson, nine years of age, a * daughter of Neil Rasmusson, died in the hospital from burns caused by her clothing catching fire at llio kitchen stove. WESTPORT, July 7. A minor named Edgar died in Westporfc Hospital this morning, as the result of injuries sustained by a fall at the State coal mit'o binns. lie" fell a distance of 15ft, and a. heavy plank fell on top of him crushing liim badly. Deceased was a married man with a family of seven.
James Edge, a maintenace contractor at Lyell, committed suicide last night by hanging himself to a tree.
CHBISTOHUECH, July. 7. A man named William John Oochrane fell dead while driving a cart on the East Belt to-day. He had been suffering from heart disease.
