THE UNIVERSITY SENATE.

Per Association. DUNEDIN, February 20. The University Senate to-day decided, on Professor Shand's motion, to appoint a select committee to consider suggestions for the amendment of the statutes relating to the B.Sc. degree in mining and metallurgical engineering, in accordance with the suggestions of the teaching stafi. of the Otago School of Mines. On the motion of Sir Robert Stout, the Law Committee was directed to consider whether candidates for the final examination for L.L.B. may not be allowed to take subjects for that examination in two sections. He explained that this was the practice in Edinburgh and Glasgow. The Chancellor stated that he had received a cable intimation that Mr Mathew A. Hunter, B.Sc., Auckland, had won the 1851 Science Exhibition scholarship for chemistry. The scholarship is worth £l5O a year, and is tenable for two years, with a "possible extension to three years. The Chancellors report was considered, and adopted. It- was announced that four essays had been sent in for the Bowen prize. The Chancellor, vice-Chancellor, and Professor McLaurin were appointed to consider them. The question of repealing the regulation, that a degree in Arts or Science is necessary, preliminary to the M.D. degree, was allowed to stand over. On the nuestion as to whether junior scholars resident in other University centres should be allowed to proceed to Dunedin f or the first year of the medical course, and be paid on the non-residential scale, it was resolved to strictly adhere to the provisions \ of the statute.
