THE WELLINGTON SUMMER MEETING. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, January 21. The weather was fine for the opening day of the summer meeting of the Wellington Racing Club," but a high wind was blowing. About 3000 persons were present. Speculation was not very brisk, but the bookmakers appeared to drive a good business. The sum of £9043 was put through the machine to-day, against £16,743 on tne first day last year, when the races- were held on" a holiday. The following are the results:— ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP. The field were well together until approaching the straight, where Queen's Guard took charge and wen under the whip bv half a length. Dividends, £3 Is and 12s. MAIDEN PLATE. Also started, Frontier. Won very easily bv a length and a half. Dividend, £2 6s. WELLINGTON CUP. St. Michael 1 Shannon *—... 2 Melwood ; 3 Also started, Cannie Chiel. Melwcod led for half a mile, when St. Michael went to the front and led for the remainder of the journey, winning easily by four lengths ; a; good race fcr second place, Shannon gaining the verdict by half a length. Dividend, £1 7s. WELLESLEY STAKES. Orloff 1 P-orirua . 2 Greek Maid 3 Also started —Dirk and Immersion. Orloff assumed the lead shortly after the start, and easily stalling off a challenge by Porirua, won bv three lengths. Dividends, £1 4s and £i 14s 6d. PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP. Canteen 2 Ringlet 3 Also started—Glenogle, Indian Queen, Sunfish, and Ayrdale. Blazer was soon in front, but in the straight he was tackled by Canteen. A good race reunited, in _ a length and a half victory for Blazer. Dividends, £3 19s and 15s.
