Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 3. A fije occurred to-night in a two-storeyed building near the railway wharf, occupied by Mr J. Reid, boatbuilder, and Mr J. D. Goss, fish-dealer. The premises were gutted, but the boats were saved. The loss was practically confined to tools and machinery. CHRISTCHURCH, Januaiy 3. Captain Scott, of the exploring ship Discoveiy, has written to Mr F. Waymouth, chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, and manager of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, asking him to furnish to Sir Clement Markham a list of all 1 canned and' preserved provisions suitable for the use of the relieving ship, which will leave Lyttelton with Supplies for the Discovery next year. Captain Scott says that he had great difficulty in finding out while at Home what could be procured in this colony, and he feels sure that it will help Sir Clement Markham considerably to get such paiticulare before tile relieving ship is fitted out. Mr Waymouth will be glad to get particulars of anything likely to be of use in the Arctic regions with the prices at which they can be procured, and these he will send Home to Sir Clement Markham. Rain set in this afternoon, and several showers have since fallen. It looks unpromising for the cricket match, Hawkes Bay v. Canterbury, to-morrow. J DUNEDIN, January 3.
