The cycling road race from Warrnambool to Melbourne, 165 smiles, was won fay Niva, a local rider. -Ralston, the New .Zealander, from scratch finished fifth, making- the fastest time, 9hrs 30sec. THE FEDERAL TARIFF. SYDNEY, October 12. Fruit-growers are becoming anxious lest New Zealand should place a high tariff on fruit as a Teprisal for the Federal tariff, thus destroying New South Wales' best market. The opinion is expressed here that- New Zealand being strong enough to stand by herself, it was unwise to arouse her hostility because she did not see her way clear at present to join the Federation. The "Sunday Times" says that the tariff is inadvertently a compliment to New Zealand, inasmuch as the producers in the Commonwealth proclaim to the world that they cannot -compete with her on level terms.
