HUNTING.

.- THE OPENING MEET. The members and friends of the South Canterbury Hunt Club opened the 1901 season yesterday afternoon with a meet at the Kennels. On arrival there the Master gave all a hearty welcome, and invited them to partake of luncheon, and after doing full justice to it, he briefly ■welcomed members of the club and friends. He said that 1901 promised to be one of the biggest hunting seasons in South Canterbury, starting about two weeks earlier than usual, and in addition holding five meets at Waimate and five at Geroldine. He would do all he could to make th« meets enjoyable, and to provide the best of iport at them, and was sure he could rely on their liberal support. In a short time his brother would arrive ia Timaru from Home, and would, assist him in discharging the duties of Master. The Master concluded by calling-for three cheers for the fariners whose'country they were to hunt over this year. A move was then. made to the yard, where, the Master and .Huntsman having got into ; the saddle, hounds were trotted out for'-ffispecKdn/ and were\inuch admired by visitors'.:'.'. The hounds were in rare bnokle, thanks fo"diligent cars"and atten- - tion on the:part of the Huntsman. ThV. jwrty next mad« "tfcOT'way to one of fcho Hadlow paddocks' liortb. of the Kennels, where they were-not long in finding a good strong 1 hare." ' She'" made across a ploughed paddock to the-Rosebrook Settlement, and after going over' several of the holdings doubled back, again ran on to Rosebrook, and made her way .on to the road between Hadlowand'" the -:i Wai-'iti store, squatted in a culvert near' there, and was lost. This was an exceptionally long run for opening day, over good country, and well m view of the driving and cycling parties on the road. Several of the fences, especially about the settlement, were rather tricky—on the big side, with wire in them; the scent was a bit catchy; and the going was very hard. Horses and hounds had just enjoyed a breather, and a move was about to be made for another run, when the rain came on, and as it soon fell heavily, sport was brought to a close. Several of those present moved homewards, others took shelter at Hadlow, whilst others again .returned to the Kennels, where afternoon tea was waiting for them on arrival.
