PICNIC AT WAIKAKAHI.
The Waikakalii settlers celebrated their first picnic on New Year's Day, .and had a great gathering. The soaking, rain on Monday,the day first fixed for the event, and the dullish morning on Tuesday, to some extent interfered with the attendance, but the meeting was a thoroughly lively, harmonious, and pleasant affair. Next to the enthusiasm of the settlers themselves the excellent arrangements made and vigorously carried out by the president, Mr Beer, the secretary, Mr Kennedy, and members of the committee, ensured the complete success of the undertaking. In
> jthe evening a ball was held in the schoole 'house, and was so fully enjoyed that only U a few left before daybreak. Mr Pruden n 'supplied the music, and Mr Hanley was e M.C. Both gave much satisfaction. Re--1 freshments were liberally dispensed, by I Mesdames Aitken, Kennedy, Seaman, Scott s and others.. g The progrsmme carried out in the afterj. noon in one of Mr ' Hay's paddocks in- , eluded the following events:—Racing,— Boys under 14 : Hay, Wellwood, Trezise. ' Girls under 14: Dixon, Falconer, McTag--3 gart. Boys under 16—Brown,. McDonough, ' Trezise. Girls, under 16: Dixon, _ Falconer, Samuels. Single women: Miss ! Brown, Miss Dixon. Single men: Meynell, McDonough. Married women: Mrs Barclay, Mrs Kennedy. Married men: Fofsyth, Gardner. Settlers' Handicap : 1 Mcllwraith and Huston (equal). Threelegged race:- Huston, and Stewart, McDonough and Trezise; High jump : Meynell, Ryan. Sack race: Currie,. Huston. Old men's race.: Eitzharris, McTaggart. The Association have to. thank numerous patrons and 'friends for presents sent. Among the principals donors were MasseyHarris Co., Booth and McDonald, Dalgety '•and Go., National.
