CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP.
♦ — Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 15. The Chess Championship Congress opened yesterday, and play was continued until a late hour m evening. The congress was formally opened by Mr B. W, Benbojs^lncai-vJee-prestdent of the -N^vTZealand Chess Association, extending a welcome to the visiting players, and expressing his pleasure at the large number of entries, also thanking the Working Men's Club for placing their large hall at the association's' disposal. Mr Mlißon, president of the Working Men's Club, m reply stated that his" committee had also voted £5 to the prize fund. Mr Elliott (Palmereton) has withdrawn his entry,and Messrs Grieraon (Auckland), Eorsyth (Dunedin),and Key. W. Earee wiil not arrive till Monday. Games m the first round resulted as follows ; the number indicating the last move :— R. A. Cleland beat J. Edwards, both Dunedin (33) ; W. Maßon beat P. Still, both Wellington (31) ; R. J. Barnes beatW. Brown, both Wellington W.M. O, (31). W . McKay v. H. J. James, both Wellington, unfinished. F. Kumer, Masterton, takes the bye.
