THE AMERICA CUP RACE

The America Cup dates from 1851. The Royal Yacht Club offered a £100 Cup for a race round the Isle of Wight, in connection with the Great Exhibition of that year. Mr Stevens, the commodore of the New York Club, had a new yacht named the America built for the race. Mr Stevens won the race and the cup, and he presented the latter to the l\cw York Yacht Club as a perpetual Challenge Cup, open to all the world. The conditions of racing for it were at first very troublesome, but have since been much modified. In 1869 Mr Ash bury challenged New York for the Cup, with his yacht Cambria, but was beaten. In 1871 he tried again, with the Livonia, but the American Columbia won two rac^s out of three. In 1881 Mr Coatß, a Clydesraan, took over his 10-tonner Madge, and beat everything in American waters in all weathers, but a ten-tonner could not take the cup. In 1885 .Sir Richard Sutton challenged New York will) his Geneßta, but was beaten by the Puritan. Next year the Knglifih Galatea was beaten by the Mayflower. In 1893 Lord Dunraven challenged with Valkyrie 11, and the American yigilant bent her. In 1895 Lord Dunraven tried again, with Valkyrie 111, and again the Americans retained the cup, Mr Iselin'a Defender winning. The English yacht-builders have therefore failed hitherto to turn out a boat to beat the American ehampiono, though they have had nearly half a century to try it. It is this long-continued one-sidedncss of the contest, which makes the present one so interesting.

We are j'ut iu receipt of information informing us that Ben (Joodson, the Australian amateur champion, is meeting with further succei-ses in America, having won the rJalf-mile Championship at the American Grand National Meeting. He was also placed in the mile and 5-mi!e events. He rides a " Massey."
