CORRESPONDENCE.

THE EDUCATION BOARD ELECTION. TO IMB EDITOR OF THK TIM ABU HERALD. Siß,— ln your report of the meeting of the above Board, I note that my nomination as a candidate is rejected as informal on account of it not being re.r ceived m time. A word of explanation is necessary. The members of the Temuka School Committee (who made the nomination) had no notice of nomina* {tions being required until they met at their ordinary monthly meeting on the evening of the last day of January, The nomination was, therefore, made, and I' am given to understand was actually posted on the evening of the, 3lst, as early as possible under the circumstances. The chairman may have had previous notice, but the committee acted promptly on the first intimation received. It was fully intended to content the seats of two of the retiring members, chiefly on account of the arbitrary a~nd autocratic methods of the Board m their dealings with committees, but unfortunately that is now made impossible. I hope to have the pleasure of contesting at some future election. : Permit me to shortly refer to one of the more recent instances of their despotic procedure m re the Milford appointment. I note that they decided to inform the Milford committee " that they are m error m stating that the appointment had already been made" when the Board had notified them as to which applicant should be 'appointed. I wish to ask how does this square with the statement recently made at a public meeting m Temuka by a prominent member of the Board who has the unfortunate failing of sometimes blabbing out the truth.. This gentleman Raid that " the appointment was virtually made when the Board expressed a preference" for a particular applicant. Your readers will draw their own conclusions, and committeemen will no doubt note and vote accordingly. I am, etc., J. Sim. Temuka, Feb. 2nd, 1899.
