WAIMATE COUNTY COUNCIL.

'I he adjourned monthly meeting of the Waimate County Council was held on Wednesday- Members present :— Messrs Milne, Studholrae, Rhodes/ Henderson, Walk« r, Douglas, Uardie, and Lyall. The clerk took the chair and asked for nominations for chairman for the remainder of the term rendered vacant by the death of Mr Ehvorthy. Mr J. F. Douglas was proposed by Mr Rhodes aud seconded hy Mr Milne, and being unopposed was duly elected. Mr Douulan then took the chair, and said that the Council would realise as well as he himself did the great loss thf-y had sustained by the death of tbeir late chairman. A resolution was passed — " That it be ■ entered on the minutes of this Gouacil

its recognition of the loss sustained by the death of their late chairman." The Wai mate Borough Council wrote asking that a vote of condolence with Mrs Elworthy and family be conveyed from that Council, and it was resolved to embody same m the Council's letter of condolence. Correspondence w.as read from the Land and Survey Department re transferring Clements' land to the name of the Queen, and the clerk Btated that m accordance with instructions he had had the transfer prepared.— The Department is to be informed that the transfer was signed and would be forwarded on receipt of assurance that the £150 proraised would be sent. The clerk stated that the tender of Mr W. T. Buckingham, at £5 for Waihao and £1 for Deep Creek, had been accepted for the right to cut cocksfoot.— Approved. Mr L O. Mathias, Government surveyor, asked permission to close a fhort lengh of road through R.H. 17445, Waihao. — Application granted.. The clerk wa3 authorised to refund the tenant of pt. run 41, UpDer Pareora, the sum of 2s, and to the tennnt of pt. run 44 the sum of £2 9s Id, tho money being collected m error for Timaru harbour rates, the land being m the Oamaru harbour district. . The Deputy-Valuer-Gt'neral, Wellington, wrote requesting that the reduced valuation of iVir Priiigle's land, E.S. 36220 and 36503, be demanded for the current year. — The reduced rate is to be demanded. Mr A. McLintock wrote re rates.— The matter had been settled. Renewals of slaughter licenses were granted to Meyers and Jones, W. Ford. James Harper, and a new license to R. Elms, Olaio. Mr K. Elms' application for a swing gate was held over. Mrs K. Beard wrote, asking for a refund of money lost by her purchasing one of the Council's horses at auction. — The writer to be informed that the Council recognised no claim m the matter, and referring her to the auctioneer. From the Timaru Harbour Board, asking for loan of stone crusher. — Granted on condition that the machine is re turned m as good condition as when it is removed from the Council yard. From Mr A, M. Taaffe, asking for a letter r ; of recommendation. — To be granted. From Messrs Meason and March ant, with reference to drain they recommended should be cut near reserve 679, Makfkihi. It was resolved to advertise the resi- , dences of the rangers as registration offices, and that Messrs John Hender- , son, R. Wright, and Thomas Milne be requested to purchase birds eggs on behalf of the Council. The Pareora Water Committee reported everything satisfactory. ' Mr Walker asked for a statement ' j showing the total amount of rates paid lon the Norton settlement as compared I with that paid by the former occupier. j The overseer was instructed to report on the Upper Bush mad. ! Mr Walker introduced the case of Mr • Hickey, who had had his hand crushed ( while doing Council work, and it was re- ' solved to pay the time deducted. I Accounts amounting to £951 15s 43 ' were passed, and the chairman, treasurer, ' and Councillor Lyall appointed to sign . cheques. ' It was resolved that- after the consent ' of the Land Bo ird had been obtained ! for the expenditure of thirds accruing ■ from Mr Macfarlatie's run, this Council ] agrees to the exchange of roads with ' Messrs Campbell and Sons to enable a \ stock bridge to be erected across Uaka- ' teramea river at Wocky Point. j With reference to the Council's representative on tiie Charitable Aid Hoard, \ the clerk was instructed to write to the Mayor of Wai mate, requesting an expla- < nation of his remarks at a Borough ' Council meeting where he stated " that ' there is a general opinion th it Mr Coltman had lost his seat by backstairs m- ' fluence." 1 Mr Walker gave notice of motion ! "That no roads be takW over m the \ future by this Council, unless form.-d and shingled." ' Two tenders for contract 329 were re- ' ceived, and that of B. White at £74 5s ! was accepted. \ The overseer's report was read. He stated that the Gorge road had now been i widened, and the deepening of drain ' could be gone on with. The roof of the 1 Council Chambers required repairs, and ' he was instructed to have them done. ' About three miles of road m Deep Creek ' required metalling.— Held over. The Waihao water committee's report was read. Tim conclude* the business, and the meeting terminated.
