TIMARU SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Timaru School Committee was held-lnst evening. Present — Mr Grandi'"(chair*: man), Messrs Mills, Hilton, Storrier, Keith, and Harris (hon. sec). An apology was received from Mr J. Hill. Mr J. Harrop forwarded his resignation as a member of the Committee, expressing his regret at having to sever his connection witF theCommittee. — The resignation was accepted with regret, the Committee, on the motion of Messrs Mills and Hilton.puttingon record their appreciation of the good work done by him. The chairman fully endorsed the sentiment expressed. ; The headmaster reported that the average attendance was 335 boys and 333 girls. Mr H. G. Wake had left on the 29th July, and Mr Werry had been temporarily appointed to the post. Several of the pupil teachers had occupied creditable positions on the pupilteaohere' list at the late examination.
The sum of £10 3s had been collected as stationery fees. The Side School return was average attendance 53 and 61 ; highest 56 and 66.
Mr James Boys asked that the name of his son, W. E. Boys, be put on the pupil teachers' list.— Agreed to. The Board of Education wrote (1) that they saw no necessity to appoint a second truant officer; (2) that £32 2s had been forwarded for incidentals (£1 for fuel ipx pupil- teachers' examination) ; and (3) copy o\ resolution passed by the Board askingfbr an expression of opinion re making a separate district to embrace the Side School.
Letters were read from Mr W. Ingram, and from the headmaster, bearing on the sending of a child of the former to the Side School instead of the Main School. — It appeared that Mr Ingram had told two different stories of his reasons for wanting to send his child to the Side School— one story to the chairman that the child was wanted to take a cow to a paddock, and the other story to the staff that the child was wanted to deliver papers ; both errands close to the Side School.— Mr Storrier moved, Mr Keith seconded and it was carried:— "That the headmaster be instructed, to allow Mr Ingram to serid'bis child to the Side School, and that the secretary inform Milligram that the head master's reason for sending., fhis child home was that discipiinejaiist be maintained and adequate reasons given re shifting children from school to school."
Respecting the Board's resolution re Side School Mr Keith moved and Mr Storrjer^seconded :— " That this committee tias always been m favour of raising the Side School to an independent school, advancing one reason— that it would be money well spent to erect a headmaster's house, for the better protection ~6f the boa*d ? & property, -and a convenience to children coming -from south; of the school." Mr Mills moved and Mr Harris seconded, as an amendment—" That this committee e3n/jid(ei tl*c,t it is a matter for the hbußeiwjjldersvv alone who reside m that- .particular .locality, to deal with." The amendment was. carried, but subsequently a further amendment by Mr Keith to defer the matter till next meeting -was agreed t0,.. ' '• i-'flie caused by Mr Harrop'B resignation was filled by the election of Mr J. ievien, the next oh the list at the householders meeting. The bank returns as presented by Mr Keith, were— Deposited during the month, £10 8s 4d ; withdrawn, £11 3a 7d ; total to credit, £150 15s sd. Accounts to the amount of £18 0s 9d were-passed for payment. Mr.Mills gave m the visitors' report ; Messrs Hilton and Coe are visitors for this month.
