With the exception of the New Sonth Wales and Queensland consignments, it is of poor quality. January 16. The leading Australian and New Zealand shipping companies are conbining to raise freights and passenger rates m order to avoid the present ruinous competition. Sydney, January 16. Wheat, chick. 2s 3d to 2s 4d ; milling, 2s 3d. Flour, roller-made, £6 5s to £7. Oats, quiet, prime feeding, 2s Id. Maize, 2s Id. Barley, Cape, 2s. Bran, 7d. Pollard, 7d. Peas, Prussian blue, 3s lOd to 4s Potatoes, £1 10s to £2 10s. Onions, £4. Butter, dairy-made, sd ; factory-made, 6d. Cheese, 3id to 4d. Bacon, sid. With reference to the Sewell process of packing butter, the saving m freight is not so much as appears at first sight. The butter is placed m square cases and then put into kegs, so that there is a clear space on all sides, and these spaces befng filled with brine, owing to the rotundity of the kegs, .take up much more room. In addition to which they are only partially filled. The butter experts consider that at the outside the process will not give more than 4s 4d per hundredweight, and even this
amount will probably be eaten by the cost of the kegs, which will be more than for ordinaiy butter boxes. Melbourne, January 16. Wheat is brisk at 2s 2d. Flour, roller-made, £5 7s 6d. It is stated that the hemp wi^l grow to advantage m the district. The Newport freezing works have made a concession of £of Id per v lb m the freight to London, and make a' similar reduction m the freezing charges on February shipments. Adelaide,. January 16. Mr Stewart, the Official Receiver, who has examined the accounts of the Bank of South Australia m liquidation, reports that it. will be necessary to make a call of £8 per share, payable m easy instalments. The committee of shareholders of the Bank of New Zealand have. convened a meeting of shareholders .to protest against the call, and. to ask details from the New Zealand Government regarding the position of the bank. Messrs Oetze and Gerritsen and Chate and Harris, two provision firms, state that if Australian exporters are willing to accept 6d each f.pr. rabbits they could be certain of an enormous sale among the poorer classes. • . ■
