With a view of facilitating the timber industry, the Government have granted a site at Balmain for the pui*pose of erecting works for seasoning timber to be sent to the European market. The Government are also building a large wharf adjoining to land it, which will be capable of accommodating vessels of the largest draught. The plant will be capable of seasoning 2,000.000 feet annually by the Reiser process, which it has been decided to adopt. Timber can be perfectly seasoned m three weeks, which would othei .vise require years naturallyCABLE INTERRUPTION. Great complaints have been made lately about the working of the tele, graph lines m Western Australia. The Port Dai win line is interrupted, but the Western Australian lines, which are supposed to give an alternate route, are declared to be unworkable at present, and are therefore unable to assist m the transmission of English and foreign, cable messages which are accumulating at Port Darwin. THE SCIENTIFIC ASSOCIATION. Brisbane, January 14. The Association for the Advancement of Science has commenced its session. HEAVY BAINS. Perth, January 14. Heavy rains accompanied by floods continue at Coolgardie. All the dams are overflowing. RICH GOLD DISCOVERY. A new line of reef has been discovered three miles south, and for ninety miles can be traced through thirty acres, tiarrying fine gold the entire length. It is estimated that the reef will yield from loz to 50oz8 to the ton. There are also two parallel reefs. A SHOCKING DEATH. Adelaide, January 14. A shocking accident happened m the engine room of the steamer Bui imba during the voyage from Melbourne. A young married woman named Evans was being shown over the machinery, when her dress caught m the belts of the shaft coupling, and she was instantly crushed to death. The evidence at the inquest disclosed the fact that the unfortunate woman persisted m seeing the machinery against the advice of those m the engine room. VICTORIAN POLITICS. Melbourne, January 14. Speaking at Healesville, Sir J. B. Patterson indicated that the Opposition party would be willing to adopt a friendly attitude towards the Government. The Premier finds that it will not be necessary to prorogue Parliament m order to re-submit the income tax proposals. The Government subsidy to municipal bodies will probably be reduced by £100,000. The insolvency records show that there were twenty less sequestrations last year than m 1893. The total liabilities amount to £4,560,000 and assets to £1,968,000. THE FIFESHIRE.
