At Tattersall's to-night Whakawai was installed first favourite for the Cup, s to 1 being freely taken about tho aon of Lnolinus, after which 9 to 2 was the best ofi'ci-. Chicago ie quoted at 7to 1, Mentor and Tradition 8 to 1, Ensign and Bravo 10 to 1, Carlyon 12 to 1. Several largo wagers were booked, 3000 to 400 being written about Enßiyn and Bravo, whilo 1000 to 80 was taken about Carlyon. Enquiries are being .made for Melon, and 1000 to 40 is on offer againßt Malua. Nov. 4. Ths weather for the opening day of the V.R.C. spring races waa fine but rather close and sultry. Tho attendance was about 50,000, including Sir H. B. Loch, Governor of Victoria, Lord Carrington, Governor of New South Wale?, and Sir William Robinson, Governor of South Australia. Tho racing throughout wn3 very good, but tho riding of Derritt in the Derby caiißed great dissatisfaction. Carbine was undoubtedly the best colt in tho Derby, and the public supported the New Zealand horse heavily. The win of Necklet in the Maribyrnong Plato was an excellent perfoni'anco and the victory was well received by the public. (Power) 3 Pearl Shell, Volley, Wycombe, and Aldavalloch also started. The betting at the post wus7 to4 against Carbine, 5 to 2 Melos, 0 to 1 Pearl Shell, 7 to 1 Ensign, 10 to 1 Volley. As the horses were drawing up in line at the post Volley lashed out and kicked Carbine. On tho fall of the flag Wycombe dashed away with the lead and made tho running for Molos. Passing tho sheds Wycombe was still at the head of affairs, with Carbine handy. Approaching the home turn Carbine supplanted Wyoombe, but was immediately challenged by Mr Gannon's other candidate, Melos, and as the horse3 turned into the straight the latter had a little the best of it. Carbine, however, came again, and when once more in front tho race appeared a moral for him, but when within tho distanco Hales brought up EnsigD, nnd completely out-generaling Derritt, won cloverly by a head.
