TOWN & COUNTRY.

The Mnjcrom'a closer! their short scnson licro last night, with " Tho Foundry Mnalcr." This splendid play was rendered m n most masterly manner, tho Signora's acting iv tho rdle of Claire being powerful and realistic, and tlio Signor's rendition of the part of lions. Dorblay a most finiehed piece of acting. •Tho other parts were thoroughly well filled,

especially that of M. Moulinet by Mr Musgrave. His drollery relieved the heaviness of the play and was thoroughly effective. The company leavo by the first train this morning for Aehburton, where thoy repeat last n ; ght's bill. The installation of of officers m connection with St. Johi:' 3 Lodge, E.C., took place last erening us follows :— Bro. C. S. Fraser, W.M.j Bro. T. A. Walker, S.W. ; Bro J. H. Glaseon, J.W. ; Bro. J. Shepherd, Treasurer j Bro. J, Melton, Secretarj ; Bro. F. C. Watson, I.G. ; Bro. B. Morgan, Tjler. After lodge business the brethren, of whom a voty large number were present, adjourned to tbe dining-room of the Ship Hotel, where tbe usual banquet was held. The W.M. took tho chair, and tho J.W. the vice-chair. Altogether a very pleasant evening was spent, a number of visiting brethren also faking part m tbe festivities. On Christmas Eve (Saturday) the usual carol service will be held at 8 p.m. m St. Mary's Church. Tho carols will include, m addition to some old favourites, a beautiful composition -Arthur Sullivan, und anotlier by Gounod, the Angel's Song, and Bethlehem. The choir bavo been diligently practicing the Christmas music, which promises to be of unusual excellence. On the evening of Christmas Day (which this year fulls on Sunday) there will be a special service nt. tbe usual hour, when some of the carols will he repeated. During the day the Ferial responses will be Bung m lieu of the ordinary responses by Tallia, Jackson's Te Deum and Jubilate, Mozart's Gloria, and the Hallelnjah Chorus. Our contemporary, the Canterbury Times, appears this week a day earlier than usual, and m an unusually attractive form, the valid excuse being that Christmas comes but once a year, and it is necessary to mark tho occasion. The special Christmas number of the weekly paper consists of forty-eight pages of unusually readable matter, enveloped m a pretty coloured wrapper ; and its appearance is thus very different from that which its readers are accustomed to regard as normal. Among tho many interesting pages are those devoted to tbe four prize tales. Over forty of these wore sent m at little more than a fortnight's notice, m response to the offers by, tho proprietors of small prizes for the best tales fulfilling certain conditions. The whole may certainly be confidently recommended as an excellent specimen of a New Zealand weekly paper. A special meeting of tbe Geraldine Domain Board wbb held on Wednesday evening last, Mr J. Mundcll m the r.hair. The chairman stated that a track had been ploughed up round tho park, which was being used for tho purpose of traininghorses. The clerk read the letter he had sent to Mr Walton, the lessee of the park, calling on him to sign an agreement, also to grub up tbe goi'ae, trim tbe fences, and carry out tlie work necessary. He also called on the lessee to discontinue using the racing track, and to lay the same down m grass. It was decided that tho chairman and Mr R. Taylor should interview tbe lessee m reference to signing the agreement, and m tbe event of his refusing to $o so, to take such further steps as may be deemed necessary. Tho meeting then ended. A special meeting of the members of tbe Geraldine Town Board was held on Wednesday evening last, there being present Messrs J. Mundcll (chairmun), R. Taylor, J. A. Quinn, J. Williams and W. Berry. The Beeret iry of the Firo Association, Christchureb, forwarded a letter m reply to one frjru the board, iv regard to what contribution tho association would grant towards a Ere brigade if one were started m Geraldme under the supervision of the board. The reply was to tho effect that they did not grant contributions towards the formation of country brigades, but if such wore formed under the supervision of the board, and lively to work satisfactorily, tho question of assistance might bo favourably considered. After discussing the matter, it was thought there might be some inducement to call a public meeting to consider the formation of a brigade, if tho association would make some allowance It was resolved to write to tho association, asking if they would bo willing to take off the 25 per cent extra insurance rato imposed, and assist, the brigade.
