A more favorable diiy than Fri- ; d.iy for tho full enjoyment of an afternoon's ! racing could not possibly hnve been wished for than that fixed for tho club's Spring meeting. Tbe resnlt of the meeting must have been particularly gratifying to the l stewards and their officials. The starting [ generally was good, while the decision of the 1 judge (Mr Duncan) was neTer questioned. Iho number of horses coming to the post, coupled with close finishes, speak well for the handicapping. Tho following are the details of the different events : — Maiden Platb, 8 soys ; weight for ago ; i 1 mile. Mr P. Gormley's b g Wire In, aged, (Burgess) 1 MrW, Snushall'a blk m Bribery, 4vra, (Korr) 2 Butterfly, Gobbin, Rose and Charlie, also ran. Wire In went away with the lead with Rose close on his quarters tho first round. The latter got nd of her rider, and then Bribery came up with a rush and took her place, but could not lower the colours of the gelding, who won with a little to spare by a length. Hurdlbs Handicap, of 12 sots ; li miles. Mr J. Duncan's g g Snowdrift (Popplewell) 1 Mr Q. Parker's gm, Grey Kato ... 2 Only the two greys sported Bilk for this event, and what appeared to be a good race was spoiled by the mare baulking at Ibe first hurdle, and every successive hurdle after. The lot went away to a good start, Kingsdown taking the lead for the first half mile, The Gobbin whipping m, all the others m a cluster. At tho second round Woodpecker commenced to forge ahead, Wire m following suit. The race from this point really lay between tbe last two named, and although. Wire In made a grout . rush down tho straight, Woodpecker lasted . the longest and won a good race. Suefhbbds' Racb, of 6 soys ; 11 st 71b tip ; 1 mile. Mr W. Snushall's Bribery t Mr J. Robertson's Speculation ... ... + Charlie and Quicksand also started. This race really lay between the first two, and resulted m a dead heat, after a considerable amount of tbo whip and spur. Mackbnzib County Platb, of 10 sots j winner of Cup to carry 101 b penalty. 1 mile. Mr "W. Snushall's br g Woodpecker, Bst 131 b (Korr) 1 .Mr G. Parker's g m Grey Kate, Bst 71b (Burgess) 2 Kingsdown and The Gobbin also started. Woodpecker went away with the lead, Kings down and Grey Kute taking second placo simultaneously. Tho Woodpecker was not headed m the race and won hard held. Hack Shlmnq Race, of 5 soys ; weight for age ; 1 mile. Mr P. Gormley's Whale 1 Florence and 'Temuka also started. Won by a length. Consolation Handicap, of 6 soys ; 1 mile. Mr J. Fraser'a b g Garabin, aged, 9st 71b (Green) 1 Mr G. Parker's g m Grey Kate, aged, 9at (Ken) 2 Butterfly, Rose, and Tbe GobMfi also started. This was one of the best races of the day. Grey Kate took the lead for the first half-milo, closely followed by Garubin and Rose. At the last round the race became a see saw between Garabin and Kate until within a few chains from home, when Rose camo np full of running and passod the leaders by a aouplo of lengths, running inside the winning post and thus losing tho race The day's sports wound up with a Trot Race, which created no little amount of amusement, Mr Menzie's Alice Grey winning, with Xekapo close up.
