(By Teleokaph.) ArCKLASD, Oct. 1. Mr Justire Ward transacted Supreme Court business m Chambers this morning, but there was no formal reception by the Bar. For the criminal sessions, which open on Monday next, there are 43 cases and 30 prisoners. The most serious chargo is the North Shore shooting case. There ara no fewer than four cases of araon. A verdict of " found drowned, without marks of violence " was returned by the coroner's jury at the inquest on the body of Steward Jameson, tho flshermnn who was drowned m Manukau harbour. A lovers' dispute caused much amusement m the police court to-day. John Sissons was charged with horsewhipping Edward Spencer on Tuesday evening last. It was shown that the parties were rivals for tho affection of a young lady recently from Wellington, who was formerly a barmaid. She hid been brought up to Auckland by Spencer with a view to marriage, but Sissons " cut him out," and enforced his claim with a horsewhip. Tlie accused pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to pay a fine and costs amounting to £5 18s, and was bound over to keop the pence. A tender has been accepted for the construction of a reservoir on Mount Eden to hold half a million gallons. It will be placed half way up the hill, and will give supply to the high lying suburbs. At the annual meeting of the Star Boating Club no less than 62 candidates for membership are to be ballotted for. At present tho club numberß 194 members. Tho Mayor of Wellington left this afternoon m the Wairarapa for the purpose of taking part m the Jubilee Australian Municipal meeting at Sydney. The chargo against Wm. Pete, for fraudulently converting n promissory note to his own use, w»» partly heard m tho Magistrate's Court to-day and adjourned till to-morrow.
