ALLEGED FRAUD BY A SOLICITOR.

Chbibtchubch, Sept. 2S>, William Peate, solicitor, Wellington, was arrested here this morning on a warrant charging him with fraudulently converting a promissory note for £30. The nota which he is accused of appropriating, and which is not due till October 19th, was found on him. He states it was given to him by one Allan Whitfield, on September 17tb, to collect ; that it was drawn by J. Bomern, m favour of W. J. Scott-, who died from an accident received on the samo day that Peate received tho note. Peate added that he arranged with Whitfield to dolay proceedings because ha was going to Christchurch for a- holiday, perhaps to the end of the month. He was remanded to Saturday next at Wellington, and left by the Ohau this afternoon.
