CALIFORNIA AND ITS FRUITS.
Tho people of California nre beginning to think the time is coming when they will get more gold by celling their fruit than by digging for tho precious n:etal m the ground. Sajs the San Francisco Bulletin : — "When a single ship was despatched daily laden with wheat for the European markets, that circumstance attracted the attention of the wholo country. But it had no such industrial significance as sending the traius off laden with citrus fruits, or the great number of curs laden with green fruits despatched from the central ports of the State. Even tho despatch of cargoes of wheat from this poit illubtrated a comparatively new phase of agricultural industry, because it is only a fewyears since California had any surplus wheat to sill. But tho later and more interesting fact is tho beginning of a colos>al business m sending green uud dried fruits across tho country to supply Eastern markets. Tho following figures will show the wonderful fruit production of California : — During 1885 she produced m ruisme over 11,000 ,000 pounds, or nearly three times as much as m 1884 She also sent to market lust, year 1,300,000 pounds of prunes, 1,8-3,000 pounds of apples, 1,900,000 pounds of \ caches, 1,139,000 pounds of plums, {J5l»,000 pounds of appricots, 2,250,000 pounds of honey, 1,250.000 pounds of walnuts, and 1,050,000 pounds of almonds.
