SALMON AND TROUT OVA.

0 [By Telegraph.] Wellington, March 22. By the lonic, which arrived from London yesterday, a shipment of 200,000 snlmon ova came to hand for distribution m various parts of the colony. The shipment waa collected and packed under tho direction of Sir James B. Gibson Maitland, Bart., at Howietown Fishery, Stirling, and waa shipped m nine cases, each containing five trays of ova. Ab the cool chamber was only constructed for , eight cases ono of the caßes had to be Btored i elsewhere, and the contents aro m a \cry bad ; condition. Tho other cases appeared to be m fair condition. In addition to tho salmon . fchero are two cases of brown trout eggs, and one gmall box of salmon ova eggs, which have been brought out m the i ship's refrigerator hard frozen. This is ; merely an experiment to ascertain whether it is possible to successfully introduce ova by this means. Of course the condition of t the frozen eggs cannot be ascertained until they are thawed out. The salmon ova will be distributed as follows : — One box to the Wellington-Masterton Acclimatisation Society and one each to Invercargill, Dunedin, and Queenetown. The last named, together with four boxes for Canterbury, was shipped per Stella this afternoon. Mr S. C. Farr, lion, i Secretary to tho Aoclimatisalion Society at Christchurch, who left by tho Stella, takes charge of the ova as far as Dunedin. If the hatching of the eggs at Chriatthurch is successful, a portion of the fry will bo distributed among tho Acclimatisation societies at Hastings, Wanganui, Awahuri, Tauranga, Hamilton, Gißborne, and New Plymouth, the i waters of these places being too warm to hatch salmon. Some of tho young fish will also be sent to Amuri and Timaru.
