CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER.

(By Telegraph.) CnßlSTcntTßCn, March 22. An inquest was held this afternoon at Halswell on tho body of an infant son of Mr Patrick Dompaey, and resulted m a verdict of manslaughter against Heinnch Melilhopt, under the following circumstances disclosed by tho evidence : — It appeared that Mrs Dempsey was driving into Christchurch from Halswell on Saturday afternoon, and had the child with her m a spring-cart. She was driving on the proper side of tho road close to the fence, when sho met Mehlhopt, who waa driving m company with another man also m a spring-cart. Mehlhopt drove his horse from the crown of tho road slantwiso to his wrong side, and camo into collision with Mrs Dempsoy'a vehicle. Mrs Dempsey and her baby were thrown out. The child struck hi 3 head on the road, and tho blow produced concussion of the brain, from which cause death had resulted. Mehlhopt was committod by Mr Bcetham, the Coroner, to take his trial at tho Supreme Court on a charge of manslaughter.
