TOWN IMPROVEMENTS.

* We aro glad to learn that tho proprietor of the section opposito the Club Hotel lias at last made up his mind to pull down tho halfburnt birldings which for nearly four years hare been such an eyesore. What is more ho is going to erect thrco-storey premises which will bo a credit to tho town. Mr M. do H. Duval has been entrusted with the preparation of tho plan;, and after an inspoclion of them we think he has hit on a capital design. Ihe building has a frontage of 48ft on George si reet and C 7 feet on Cain's terrace. It is to bo a three-storey one with cellar. The cornor shop v/ : M be 65ft 6in by 25ft, the upper floors attached to the Bame being of similar dimensions. A east-iron spiral stain aso will lead from the cellar to the upper storeys. In addition, an hydraulic lift from the cellar to the third storey, capable of lifting a ton and a half, and provided with life-preserving gear, will ho fixed at the end of tho building. Tho adjoining shop, facing George street, will be 30ft by 13ft, with living apartments, consisting of sitting-room, thrco bedrooms, and kitchen. At the back of this shop will be erected a bakehouse 18ft by loft, with two ovens 7ft by 10ft. The style of architecture is m tho modern Bemi-Frcnch and Italian etyle, the base, or plinth, being m local blucstone. The whole of tho rest of tbo structure win bo of brick, finished m cement. The elevation on tbo George street frontago shows two large shop window fronts, filled m with plate_ glass, above them being seven semi-circular

windows, the arches of which will bo carried by local bluestone columns. The second storey will have Boven segment windows with seven pilasters dividing them. The elevation on Cain's Terraco bliows four shop window fronts, also possessing plate glass. Above these nro fonv double muHion windows, the lntiilion being made of local bluestone columns. On tho second floor these are four similar windows. The whole of the face of the building has two string courses, and will be finished with nn ornamental frieze, cornice, consoles, and bo surmounted by » handsomo moulded parapet. The height of oach Btorey will be : Cellar Bft 6in ; ground flour 16ffc, first floor 14ft, second floor 12ft. The total height from the street level to the top of the parapet is 64ft.
